Which Federation Should You Compete In?
NPC, IFBB, OCB, NGA, WBFF — what each one is, how they differ on testing and pro paths, and how to pick the right one for you.
A federation is the organization that runs the show, sets the divisions, and defines the rules — including whether athletes are drug-tested. Picking the right one comes down to your goals and your natural-or-enhanced decision.
NPC & IFBB Pro League
The largest amateur-to-pro pipeline in the sport. You compete as an amateur in the NPC and can earn an IFBB pro card by winning at qualifying events. These events are generally not drug-tested, so both natural and enhanced athletes compete.
OCB & NGA (Natural)
Drug-tested, natural federations built for athletes who compete drug-free. They use testing (polygraph and/or urinalysis in some cases) and publish banned-substance lists and tested-since requirements. If competing natural is core to your identity, a tested federation is the honest home for it.
WBFF (Fitness & Lifestyle)
Known for a commercial, entertainment-forward production with fit model and themewear rounds. It leans toward a marketable, magazine-cover aesthetic and a big stage-show presentation.
Start from two questions: are you competing natural or enhanced, and what’s your long-term goal (local stage experience, an IFBB pro card, a tested-natural title, or a lifestyle/fitness stage)? Your answers point to the federation — and your coach can confirm the fit.
- NPC/IFBB — largest path, pro-card route, generally untested.
- OCB/NGA — drug-tested, natural federations.
- WBFF — fitness/lifestyle with themewear and runway.
- Pick based on natural-vs-enhanced and your long-term goal.
