First-Time Competitors

What To Expect On Show Day

Your first competition day, start to finish — check-in, tanning, pump-up, prejudging and finals — so nothing catches you off guard.

You’ve done the prep. Now the day itself arrives — and for first-timers, the logistics can be more nerve-wracking than the diet ever was. Here’s exactly how a competition day flows so you can walk in calm and ready.

The Night Before & Early Morning

Most shows start with athlete check-in and a mandatory meeting the day before or early that morning. You’ll confirm your divisions and classes, get your competitor number, and hear the day’s schedule. Your base coat of tan usually goes on the night before, with a glaze layer in the morning.

Eat and hydrate to your coach’s plan — show day is not the time to improvise. Pack a bag with your suit, heels, jewelry, bands for pumping up, your posing music if needed, simple foods, and a robe to protect your tan.

Prejudging: Where The Show Is Won

Prejudging is the real competition. This is where judges compare physiques through quarter turns and division-specific posing and place you. It’s often less glamorous than finals — morning light, fewer spectators — but it matters most. You’ll pump up backstage, get one last tan touch-up, and wait for your class to be called.

First-timer tip

Watch the class ahead of yours from backstage. You’ll see the callout order and how the head judge is running quarter turns, so your turns are crisp when it’s your turn.

Finals & Awards

Finals are the evening show — bigger crowd, stage lighting, and for some divisions an individual posing routine. Then awards: callouts, placings, and overalls. Win or place or not, you’ll walk off having done something most people never will.

Key Takeaways
  • Check-in and the athlete meeting set your schedule — don’t miss them.
  • Prejudging is where placings are decided, not finals.
  • Pack a full kit and protect your tan.
  • Follow your coach’s show-day food and water plan exactly.

Common Questions

Show-Day FAQ

What should I bind or pack for my first show?
A competition suit, heels or appropriate footwear, jewelry, resistance bands for pumping up, a robe to protect your tan, simple snacks and water per your coach’s plan, flip-flops, and your competitor registration confirmation. Bring more than you think you need.
What is the difference between prejudging and finals?
Prejudging is the daytime comparison round where judges score physiques through quarter turns and posing — this is where your placing is essentially decided. Finals is the evening show with a bigger audience, sometimes an individual routine, and the awards presentation.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive in time for the mandatory athlete meeting and check-in, which is usually early morning or the evening before. Give yourself buffer for tanning touch-ups and pump-up. Your coach and the show promoter’s schedule will give you exact times.
